It’s no surprise that Kubota Garden is one of Seattle’s most in-demand locations for senior portraits. Between its winding garden paths, vibrant foliage, and serene waterfalls, it’s a dream backdrop for any session. Even on a weekday afternoon, the garden was alive with color and visitors, proof that this South Seattle gem never loses its charm.

For this senior session, I met with a high school graduate and his mom who were already familiar with the space. They came prepared with a list of favorite spots (the rock formations at the entrance, the open field, and the waterfall area) each offering a completely different look and mood.

It’s no surprise that Kubota Garden is one of Seattle’s most popular locations for senior photos; the greenery, water features, and bold fall colors make every session feel cinematic.

Exploring the Garden

We started our session near the entrance, where large stone structures and colorful foliage created a dramatic setting. From there, we made our way across the garden’s signature red bridges, stopping to take portraits framed by the lush greenery and vibrant fall tones.

At the waterfall area, soft light filtered through the trees, creating the perfect glow for portraits that felt both calm and timeless. This part of Kubota Garden is always a favorite for seniors who want a mix of natural textures and depth in their photos.

As we continued walking, we found several spontaneous locations, quiet corners with golden light, moss-covered rocks, and reflections on the water that added variety to the final gallery.

Just like in my Snoqualmie Point Park senior session, exploring the landscape played a big part in this shoot. We took time to walk around Kubota Garden, finding hidden nooks and angles that captured both the environment and the senior’s relaxed personality.

Why Kubota Garden Is a Favorite for Senior Photos

Kubota Garden offers so much versatility for photography. Whether you’re going for a polished, editorial look or something more natural and candid, there’s no shortage of variety. The Japanese-inspired landscape features bridges, ponds, and hidden trails that make every visit unique.

For afternoon sessions like this one, the garden’s soft, diffused light makes it easy to capture flattering tones and true-to-life colors. It’s ideal for seniors who want portraits that feel organic and vibrant without needing an elaborate setup.

If you’re planning your session here, weekdays are best, parking is easier to find, and you’ll have a little more space to explore without the weekend crowds.

I always recommend choosing locations that feel personal or meaningful, whether that’s a place like Kubota Garden or a coastal view like this Redondo Beach graduation session in Federal Way. Each spot tells a slightly different story and sets a unique tone for your gallery.

A Relaxed & Confident Senior Session

This session felt easy and fun from start to finish. The senior brought a laid-back confidence that worked perfectly with the natural surroundings, leaning on bridges, laughing between shots, and effortlessly pulling off classic poses. His denim-on-denim outfit complemented the garden’s warm greens and autumn hues beautifully.

It’s always a joy photographing seniors who have a clear vision while still being open to exploring along the way. That blend of planning and spontaneity often leads to the best results, and this gallery is proof of that.
