A baby’s first Christmas is one of those once-in-a-lifetime milestones that families never forget. This cozy in-home holiday photo session in Puyallup, Washington was centered around exactly that, celebrating a four-month-old baby boy’s very first Christmas surrounded by warmth, family, and meaningful details.

Photographing this session at home made everything feel relaxed and personal. With familiar spaces, sentimental decorations, and a calm pace that worked perfectly for a young baby, the session flowed naturally and allowed us to capture genuine moments without rushing.

This was a full holiday family session that included portraits of the baby on his own, sweet moments with his mom, and heartfelt images with both parents together, creating a complete story of his first Christmas season.

Photographing babies during meaningful milestones, like a first Christmas or cultural celebrations, is one of my favorite parts of family photography, including events like this Annaprashana ceremony celebrating a baby’s milestone in Everett, WA.

A First Christmas Filled with Meaningful Details

One of the most special parts of this session was how personal it felt. The baby’s aunt is a big fan of Stitch, so we incorporated her Christmas tree and had him photographed nearby, as well as in an adorable Stitch costume. Those images added a playful, joyful element to the session and made it completely unique to this family.

In addition to the family’s own decorations, I brought along my holiday mini session props, rustic wooden gift boxes, bells, lanterns, cozy blankets, and seasonal textures, and styled a setup in front of their fireplace. Using the same decor I offer during my holiday minis helped give the photos a polished, timeless holiday look while still keeping everything relaxed and intimate.

The combination of warm firelight, soft blankets, and neutral holiday tones created a cozy atmosphere that photographed beautifully, especially for a baby this young.

These cozy fireplace setups and festive details are similar to the holiday studio sessions I photograph each year, like this recent Tacoma Christmas studio family session at IAMCREATIVESPACE and last year's Elegant Christmas Photo Shoot at IAMCREATIVESPACE in Tacoma, WA, which offers a warm, timeless look perfect for young families.

Baby Portraits at Four Months Old

At four months old, this little guy was at such a sweet stage. Wide-eyed, expressive, and just starting to sit with support, he gave us a wonderful mix of curious looks and soft smiles. We photographed him on his own to capture those fleeting baby details, his tiny hands, expressive eyes, and soft expressions, moments parents always want to remember once those early months pass.

These individual baby portraits are especially meaningful during a first Christmas, documenting just how small he was during this season of life.

The early months pass so quickly, which is why milestone sessions, like this one-year motherhood session at Flaming Geyser State Park, are such a meaningful way to document your child’s first year.

We also captured portraits of the baby with his mom and with both parents together. These images focused on connection, the way they held him close, the quiet moments of eye contact, and the natural affection that comes so easily during those early months of parenthood.

In-home holiday sessions like this are ideal for young babies because they allow for breaks, outfit changes, and a comfortable environment. Everything moves at the baby’s pace, which results in calm, genuine photos that feel effortless and real.

Why In-Home Christmas Sessions Are Perfect for Babies

For families with newborns or young babies, photographing holiday sessions at home can be the perfect option. There’s no travel stress, no worrying about cold weather, and plenty of flexibility built into the session. Familiar surroundings help babies stay relaxed, and sentimental spaces, like a family fireplace or a Christmas tree decorated with meaning, add depth and authenticity to the photos.

This session beautifully shows how holiday family photography doesn’t need a studio to feel magical. Sometimes the most meaningful images happen right at home.

Preserving Your Baby’s First Holiday Season

First Christmas photos are about more than decorations or outfits, they’re about documenting a moment in time that passes quickly. In just one year, this baby will look completely different, and these images will serve as a reminder of how small he was during his very first holiday season.

Sessions like this are designed to create images families will come back to year after year, when their child is older, when traditions have grown, and when those early days feel far away.

If you’re thinking ahead to next year, my holiday mini sessions in Seattle and South King County are designed for families who want festive portraits without the stress of a long session.
